By encouraging the use of local, endemic species, the aesthetic and environmental value of rehabilitated land is enhanced. A site rehabilitated with a mix of local species ensures the integrity of the surrounding environment is retained and encourages the return of native fauna.

The development of the appropriate seed mix for successful results in rehabilitation and landscaping applications is an obvious consideration for environmental managers, landcare coordinators and landscape planners. Kimseed specialise in the construction of practical seed lists for use in:

  • Landscaping and Town planning
  • Mining and Extractive Industries
  • Agriculture
  • Rural Landcare
  • Dune Rehabilitation

Through experience and research, Kimseed International designs mixes incorporating more endemic species for long-term success and sustainability. We utilise botanical survey and soil analysis results regularly in determining species suitability.

For example, we have taken the emphasis away from traditionally "easy" bluebush and saltbush mixes for minesite revegetation. We now encourage the use of ground stratum mixes, consisting of native grasses and daisies. These mixes better represent surrounding vegetation and are conducive to dump conditions.

The important focus on understorey species critical in rural landcare projects has been adapted and strongly developed by Kimseed to provide far more complete mixes for revegetating salt-affected or eroded farm-lands.

International Supply

Our reliability and resources have secured many major international clients for Australian seed. Kimseed has developed mixes and supplied Australian native and pasture seeds throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Two of our major current contracts involving seed list consulting are seed supply and environmental services to the largest mine site construction project in the world (Sumbawa, Indonesia), and forage seed supply and technical services for agricultural provinces (China).

Quality Control

All seed arriving at our Perth-based warehouse is cleaned, cut-test for preliminary quality assessment, sealed and stored under appropriate conditions. We have a permanent seed cleaning and processing team using purpose-designed and built machinery highest quality processing and packaging.

Purity

Our policy on seed purity is to ensure our customers receive clean seed that is exceeds the current industry standards. There are of course variables in seed morphology and physical characteristics effecting the quantity of inert matter in seed mixes. Through the development of our own seed cleaning and processing equipment we minimise inert matter and maximise value for money. Our reputation as superior native seed merchants is firmly based on the quality of our product.

Viability and Germination Testing

Generally seed viability and germination testing is conducted on client request. Certification from independent laboratory testing is provided. Viability tests will be done on collections of new species and for evaluating viability of older seed stocks.

Identification

Kimseed collectors and botanists continue to collaborate to build excellent field herbariums. These are robust colour photocopies of actual botanical specimens, and are carried by all Kimseed teams. Many of the specimens have been identified using the resources and assistance of the WA Herbarium and the Kimseed library.

Seed Collection

Seed is collected by our own, trained teams or one of our experienced associate contractors. Teams are managed by specialist collectors with many years of experience in field conditions. Our collectors operate in a sensitive manner, ensuring that plants and the surrounding environment are left intact.

Native seed collection requires an expert botanical knowledge combined with an understanding of the seed maturation process. Collections are timed to coincide with maturation of seed on the plant.

Seed is collected using various methods such as vacuum harvesting, beating, pruning, handpicking and brush harvesting. These methods are selected and adapted to each species to obtain seed quickly and efficiently.

Seed Stocks - Financing and Control

Kimseed has recently invested in a specialist inventory control and tracking software system, providing specific provenance and batch collection information.

Our system efficiently tracks the seed from the time it enters the store to the time of dispatch. This allows clients and staff better access to information about individual batches of seed.
